Initial thoughts for the mosaic piece: Upon initial look at this piece we believe that it is a roman mosaic and may have resided on the bottom of a fountain. We made these two assumptions based on the look of the characters and the fact that there was fish swimming across the top in a way that would suggest water had been on top of it at some point. In the characters depicted there is a stark contrast between a character who looks dark and one who looks light. This play on colours adds a look of good and evil to the characters, giving the whole piece a devil versus angel feel. As far as hybrids go, both the light and dark characters have hybrid aspects. In the light character, these aspects are wings coming from its head, and what looks like a serpent with a fox head by its side. These hybrid aspects are also shown in the dark entity as lobster claws coming from his head and an animal looking frame. Another interesting aspect of this piece is that the “good” entity has a look of youth and innocents, whereas the “evil” entity looks older and wise to the ways of the world.
