This basin carved from limestone is held at the Louvre. It was found in Susa, and dates from C 13th or 12th BC, a time when the Elamites lived in this area. The relief images on each side of this piece include goatfish figures next to a tree; the images are described as referring to the Mesopotamian god Ea/the Sumerian god Enki. This work speaks to the ancient origins of goatfish imagery, and its survival in successive cultures for over 12 centuries.
