The Sphinx lived on Mount Sphincius. She would bother the people of Thebes by going up to them and asking dark questions and riddles. If they didn’t answer she tore them to pieces. The king of Thebes, Creon, issued an edict promising his own sister in marriage to anyone who could explain the riddle of the Sphinx. Oedipus answered the Sphinx and enraged she threw herself from a rock and died. Source: http://www.tribunesandtriumphs.org/roman-gods/sphinx.htm
